Code Format Title In stock & On-line SMA04-3906 Report Clinical Preventive Services in Substance Abuse and Mental Health Update: From Science to Services(SMA04-3906) This monograph explores the need for and value of preventive services for mental health and substance use disorders in health care settings. These disorders are widespread and costly, and they exact a high toll on our Nation and around the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) determined the “burden of disability” associated with one major mental illness, unipolar depression, ranked fourth among all leading causes of disability worldwide. By the year 2020, the disease burden from depression will rank number two, surpassed only by heart disease (Murray & Lopez, 1996). The disability and disease burden of various medical conditions were estimated by “disability-adjusted life years,” or DALYs. This global burden has been underrecognized in economic cost and the impact on social structure.

Task Force members included mental health consumers; representatives of federal, state, and local mental health and substance abuse agencies; advocacy groups; researchers; and policy analysts.
